Female Student Empowerment
Life in rural Kenya for our students is not an easy one, and this is made even harder for our female students who are missing, on average, one week a month of school due to not having menstrual products. We set out to find a solution that we decided needed to meet the girls needs but also needed to be environmentally conscious in an area where there is no garbage collection. We discovered the BFree Menstrual Cup. These Canadian made menstrual cups are anti-bacterial (do not require boiling) and can last up to 8-10 years and are a great choice for the students as they are reusable and won’t end up littering the community.
We are raising funds to purchase the cups and supply them to our students. We are looking to acquire a total of 165 cups (each cup is $45 CAD) so with even a small donation, you can make a big difference while supporting a Canadian organization with a revolutionary product. This is a WIN for everyone, especially our students, who will receive education on how to use the product and ongoing support.
As a part of Lalmba Canada’s vocational student program, we not only fund their tuition, we also ensure that our students have the supplies they need to be successful in their studies. For our secondary students this involves ensuring that they have their school uniform, pens, pencils, notebooks, textbooks etc.
This looks a little different for our vocational students who are learning their trade and are expected to complete practical work in the field as a requirement of their schooling. We recently learned that while tools are provided for them in the classroom, once they start their practical work (called “assignments” in Kenya), they must provide their own tools, similar to trades students here in Canada.
This carries a heavy financial burden for our students, and many end up attending without tools which impacts their success in completing their program and establishing good relations with potential employers.
We are hoping you can help. With every charitable donation you make we get closer and closer to ensuring that our vocational students have the tools they need. Please click here and help our students complete their training: https://www.zeffy.com/en-CA/donation-form/trades-helping-trade-students
